The Future of UK Manufacturing and Supply

Traditionally, the U.K. was a major world leader in manufacturing and construction, being where the industrial revolution initially began. However, during the second half of the 20^th century, the sector steadily declined. This dwindling was brought to a halt and through new innovations and governmental support, the industry has been rekindled.

Alongside this exciting new growth, there has also been a range of challenges. Supply chains have been massively disrupted over the last few years due to the global health crisis, thus leading many corporations to source local materials for their production.

This local sourcing, nonetheless, was seen as a net positive and highlighted another issue within U.K. Industry: the country’s reliance on imports from overseas.

Such dependence on imports not only influences the local economy but also causes significant distress to the environment with an increase in carbon emissions due to transportation etc. whilst running against the government’s goal of net zero by 2050. However, it is impossible for some materials to be sourced locally, so how do   businesses import while still maintaining sustainable practices?

Additionally, U.K Industry suffers from a skills gap, where employers are unable to find young talent with the manual and technical skills needed. What are companies doing to combat this?
