10 Steps to Achieving a Sustainable Transition to Net Zero for UK Businesses
With mounting governmental pressure and the UK’s Net Zero 2050 target, businesses are increasingly being tasked to reduce their carbon emissions and adopt sustainable practices to meet ever evolving regulations.
In the last Winter Budget, the government introduced a raft of new incentives to encourage industrial decarbonisation, particularly for companies looking to invest in carbon capture, hydrogen, and electrification, including updates to the Climate Change Levy, and delays to the inclusion of indirect emissions within scope of the CBAM until 2029. However, if your business isn’t quite there yet, then investing in these new technologies is a bit of an ambitious first step.
For many organisations, it can be difficult to know where to start and what projects to prioritise when they are planning their route to zero. So, to help you get started, TEAM Energy’s Marketing Executive, Tererai Maenzanise, has shared her top actionable 10 steps for delivering real and sustainable energy efficiency.
How to Embed Positive Energy Practices and Sustainable Success
- Calculate your Carbon Footprint: Getting to grips with your greenhouse gas emissions is a crucial first step. It allows you to see where you are the least energy and resource efficient. This is split across scopes, Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned sources, e.g. company or employee vehicles), 2 (indirect emissions from generated sources, e.g. electricity usage), and 3 (indirect emissions from your supply chain e.g. overseas manufacturers). Assessing your emissions and documenting your output will be your baseline to record progress going forward. Using a tool such as TEAM Energy’s business activity carbon calculator can help estimate your emissions.
- Secure Leadership Buy-In: Many organisations operate with a traditional top-down leadership approach, where the strategy and ethos of the company is dictated by a board of directors. In getting senior leadership on board with a sustainability strategy, that encourages lower emissions and increased energy efficiency, you can ensure organisation wide commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
- Develop your Net Zero Roadmap: With your baseline on hand, you can draft a carbon reduction plan detailing the actions needed to lower emissions. To ensure you don’t run into any complications, make sure to research governance, regulations, and set achievable KPIs for your net zero journey.
- Set Science-Based Targets: Once you have your Carbon Reduction Plan, you can have your targets reviewed and approved against the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) or the Paris Agreement. This adds a layer of authority and accountability to your organisation, regarding your net zero journey.
- Improve Energy Efficiency: With a plan in place, it’s time to implement the operational changes that will make the impact on your emissions. Such as optimising you air conditioning system, switching to LED lighting, or installing smart thermostats. Measures like these boost efficiency whilst reducing costs.
- Invest in Renewable Energy: Making the switch to a renewable energy source can supercharge your net zero efforts by lowering your indirect emissions. There are a few ways to make the change. One way is to implement on site energy generation, for example installing solar panels to your building. If a structural change is not possible for your organisation, you can lower your emissions by purchasing renewable energy credits.
- Encourage Sustainable Transport: You can promote low carbon commuting to your staff by encouraging public transport or providing EV charging stations at your place of business. You can also consider schemes like salary sacrifice for cycling or EV purchases to make sustainable travel more attractive and attainable for employees.
- Engage With Your Supply Chain: Did you know that supplier emissions can account for a majority of an organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions? This makes engaging suppliers and lowering their emissions a vital step for your overall goal. You could look to encourage suppliers reduce their own carbon output or look for alternatives which produce lower emissions. This can accelerate your trajectory towards net zero by reducing your scope 3 emissions.
- Invest in Carbon Offsetting and Removal: For unavoidable emissions, for example if you are a manufacturer and emit GHG’s as part of your process, invest in certified offset projects such as reforestation or direct air capture to neutralise your footprint.
- Monitor, Report, and Get Involved: Track your emissions using frameworks like the GHG Protocol or GRI Standards. Regularly report on progress and engage staff in sustainability initiatives, as building long-term habits is as important as making major organisational changes.
Achieving a sustainable transition to net zero starts with addressing your organisational sore spots and building an effective carbon reduction strategy. With TEAM’s steps you will be able to assess and prioritise changes that put your business on the route to net zero. Making every operational change work to bring down your costs in the long run and continually build up your sustainability.
