Developments in UK Manufacturing

Posted on: 03/03/2023

There is no doubt that the manufacturing sector is vital to the strength of the UK economy. Everything we drive, use, eat and wear is linked to manufacturing somehow.

This is also an industry undergoing fundamental change. Digitisation and the increased use of robotics and automated systems are making the manufacturing process faster, more efficient and cost effective. However, a skilled workforce is still needed, with many workers not being replaced, but instead upskilled to operate more complex systems.

With these changes come challenges with one of the main ones being that the demands of consumers are now rapidly evolving, forcing manufacturers to change with them to remain competitive.

Along with the benefits of digital transformation, issues such as cyber security must also be taken into consideration. Another major hurdle is the recruitment and retention of highly skilled staff needed in modern manufacturing. Many manufacturers are experiencing a ‘skills gap’ due to experienced staff retiring, but not enough young talent being recruited to replace them.

Manufacturers are also under pressure to make their working practices more sustainable and ecologically sound, with less waste and the elimination of hard-to-dispose-of plastics.

These developments are the focus of Executive TV’s latest special programme, “Developments in UK Manufacturing”, featuring discussion and analysis from key industry experts.
