Industrial Sustainability
Posted on: 03/02/2023
The growing concern around environmental issues such as the climate crises, pollution of both land and our oceans is presenting challenges both for businesses and UK Industry as a whole.
Companies are facing pressures both from within and externally to rapidly adopt greener approaches to their working practices – such as reducing their carbon footprint, recycling and using biodegradable materials.
This process is throwing up some difficult challenges. However well meaning, businesses must remain competitive and turn a profit or face bankruptcy. Similarly, many in industry feel that government targets and regulations will be difficult to achieve in the timeframe given.
At the same time, industry is also having to address other challenges – such as difficulties with resources, the retention and recruitment of young staff, and the crises in Europe forcing up energy costs.
There are many positive solutions to these issues, such as advances in battery storage, the concept of circular economies, the use of renewable energies such as solar and wind power, and the possibilities of the use of hydrogen as a clean source of energy for industry and transportation.
Many employers are also launching apprenticeship programmes. These schemes offer the benefits of a paid job where the employee gains valuable experiences alongside classroom study. These can benefit employers by providing the right skills needed, and helping with bringing in young people to industry, solving issues around the lack of new talent coming in to replace older staff.
These issues are the subject of Executive TV’s latest programme: “Industrial Sustainability” with expert views and discussion from a number of key industry figures. Featured in the programme are:
